by Fellowes, Julian
{mosgoogle} by Fellowes, Julian Edith Lavery, the daughter of an upper-middle-class accountant, is a dedicated social climber who is "launched" into the world of country balls and London "seasons" by her emotionally and financially supportive parents, who are hoping for a good "return" on their investment. Enter Charles, Earl of Broughton, and eligible batchelor. Edith "marries up" to the delight of her world - and to the dismay of his. Author Fellowes employs a narrator: a socially-connected actor who remains Edith's confidant and loyal supporter when her boredom with Charles leads to an affair with handsome, shallow Simon. Edith regrets her infidelity and seeks reconciliation with Charles - a situation made more desperate by an unexpected event. Fellowes' contemporary English comedy of manners is a tasty sampling of the upper crust. - reviewed by Susanne, South County Regional, PLCMC
