Author: | | Publishing Date: | 1956 First Edition | Condition: | Rubbing and small tears to dustcover. Price cut from corner of front flap dustcover. | | Hardcover The contention that a six-acre plot in the heart of London is playing a significant part in influencing the destinies of nations may sound wildly fantastic. Yet such is the central theme that has inspired this book. Based upon historical research, it traces some highlights in the story of Anglo-American relations through three hundred years, as seen from the focal point of Grosvenor Square. Signs of American 'occupation' are apparent to any casual stroller in the Square's precincts today; and many people will recall how it gained the nickname of 'Little America' during World War Two : ho‘s G.I.s dubbed it `Eisenhowerplatz, and liaison officers from the War Office in Whitehall christened it 'Madison Square'. But how many people realize that first links between Grosvenor Square and America were forged in the days of the original - Colonists? The home of the second Baltimore, founder of Maryland, was in the Square ; so was that of Lord North, whose attitude towards the Colonists led the. `Boston Tea-Party'. John Adams, firs: ister to be sent to England after the Declaration of Independence, lived in Grosvener Square, and his daughter, Abigail, was married from there. The list of famous residents—British and American—is endless ; three memorial plaques to be found the Square have American associations. From all the comings and goings of famous American can personalities like John Quincy Adams. Robert Todd Lincoln, T. F. Bayard ( the ors: U.S. Ambassador), Walter Hines Page, John G. Winant, Averell Harriman, Eleanor and many, many more. |
