Description:

Hardcover.

Dr. Paul Natvig's biography- of Jacques Joseph (1865-1934), the father of the art of modern rhinoplasty. is the outcome of a ten-year painstaking search for documents. Voluminous correspondence in several languages and numerous interviews with witnesses in various countries,
as well as photographic have allowed him to recreate the life and the medical career of this unusual personality, setting them against the historical. political, and social background of the time. Moreover Professor Joseph's career, begun under the Wilhelminian rule and ended at the onset of the Hitler Regime, is a piece of German Kulturgeschichte. representative of the emancipation of the Jewish upper class, in particular of the intelligentsia, and of their total identification with German culture until Nazism came into power. Although he himself was spared the tribulations of exile because of his early "natural death" (not quite unrelated. to the political events), his family, especially his widow who survived him for thirty-four years, had to confront the hardship of emigration.
On the professional level Professor Joseph reached the pinnacle of fame. His masterful operations at the Berlin Charite and in his universally renowned clinic. as well as his fundamental textbook on plastic surgery and his countless written and oral contributions to medical journals and meetings, established him as the supreme authority in his field. There was hardly any part of the human face and body which he could not reconstruct and enhance. Surgeons from all corners of the world streamed to Berlin to observe his skills.
