The author has the enviable gift of complete simplicity which never totters into the corny or banal — no mean feat in these days of lowbrow inspirational material which often insults the intelligence of the reader .. .
The points made are tied quite effectively together by a final series of checklists covering the behavior of readers in their various relationships and walks of life.
By putting the answers from 20 points on each list, a self profile emerges — an amusing, interesting and quite simple method of self-rating used even by psychologists as eminent as H.J. Eysenck.
Fr Dowling is not trying to be profound but merely asking people to pose simple questions about their lives which otherwise they might dodge' to their own hurt and future confusion.
Only sparingly does he present his own necessarily general solutions and they refer, rightly enough, back to the Gospels.
It is a small book and not an expensive one. In this age, there's not much for busy people, ordinary people with no great pretensions to scholarship or learning to skim through or reflect upon which is not lewd at one extreme or sanctimonious at the other.
If you want a complex tract on child care, parent toleration, adolescent raising, or marriage retrieving, this book will hardly fill the bill.
But if you want some straightforward questions and attitudes concerning those multitudinous personal worries which needlessly drain our joy out of living, then this could be your meat.
There are excellent checklists which kids, parents, spouses and teachers can all share and discuss.
