This is the first novel by the Melbourne psychiatrist who has already published nine books on different aspects of psychiatry. The themes and problems that he knows so well are here presented in a cohesive story.
John is so shy, sensitive and unsure of himself that he is unable to face life in his father's business. He wanders aimlessly on the beach where he finds a fisherman's daughter. The poetic simplicity of their relationship brings him back to reality, and together they face the vicissitudes of life as medical student and nurse. The story is revealed as the characters describe events to the shadowy figure of a psychiatrist.
The sensitive portrayal of the disturbed youth gives us insights into the hidden strivings which are part of us all, and in an indirect way gives expression to the author's rather poetic concept of psychiatry.
Dr Meares is a past president of the International Society for
Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, and is well known for his many contributions in this field. He has also travelled widely, and has had considerable first-hand experience in Eastern Mysticism. It is natural that these two interests, medical hypnosis and eastern mysticism, should find some expression in the present story.
